Thursday September 7, 2006, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - The Formosan Association for Public Affairs Canada (FAPA Canada) called on the government of Canada to fully support Taiwan's bid for membership to the United Nations. Taiwan will make its fourteenth consecutive bid to join the international organization.

"The 23 million citizens of Taiwan are currently denied representation in this allegedly inclusive world body," remarked Dr. Harry Chen, president of FAPA Canada. "We ask that Prime Minister Harper and Minister Peter MacKay support the sovereign right of the Taiwanese people to self-determination and to be represented at the United Nations."

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke enthusiastically about spreading democratic ideals throughout the globe," continued Chen. "Now is the time for him to show his steadfast support for democracy and freedom in fully supporting Taiwan."

The island nation will attempt to gain entry under the name "Taiwan" instead of "Republic of China (Taiwan)" for the first time. FAPA Canada expressed its full support for using the name of "Taiwan" for UN membership.

"The name Republic of China is an outdated relic of the Kuomintang dictatorial era," stated Stan Lai, the vice-president of FAPA Canada. "The current reality is that Taiwan and China are two separate and sovereign countries, and the United Nations needs to take this into account."

Jeudi le 7 Septembre, 2006, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - L’Association Formosane pour les Affaires Publiques Canada (AFAP Canada) a exigé que le gouvernement du Canada soutienne fortement l’admission de Taïwan à l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU).

“Les 23 millions de citoyens de Taïwan n’ont pas de répresentation dans cette organisation importante,” a remarqué Dr. Harry Chen, le président de l’AFAP Canada. “Nous réclamons que M. Harper et M. MacKay respectent les droits d’autodétermination et de répresentation du peuple taïwanais à l’ONU.”

“M. Harper avait dit qu’il voulait diffuser les valeurs de la liberté et de la démocratie au monde,” a continué Chen. “Maintenant, il peut faire ce qu’il voulait en offrant son soutien à Taïwan, un pays démocratique.”

Taïwan va cette fois employer le nom de “Taiwan” au lieu de “La République de Chine (Taiwan)” pour son offre d’admission. L’AFAP Canada soutient l’usage du nom “Taïwan” entièrement.

“Le nom de la République de Chine est une relique du passé appartenant au régime dictatorial de Guomindang,” a dit Stan Lai, le vice-président de l’AFAP Canada. “L'ONU doit respecter le fait que Taïwan et la Chine sont deux pays indépendants et differents.”

今年是台灣第十四次為加入聯合國這個國際組織而努力. 加拿大台灣人公共事務會 (FAPA Canada) 呼籲加拿大政府全力支持 台灣成為聯合國的會員國.

「聯合國應該是一個包容世界所有人民的國際組織, 但是二千三百萬台灣公民現在仍然被排斥在外」加拿大台灣人公共事務會會長陳星旭博士說, 「我們要求Harper總理及MacKay外交部長支持台灣人民自決的權利, 並且在聯合國有一席代表權.」

陳會長繼續說明,「Harper總理很熱忱地向全世界推廣民主理念, 現在是他以全力支持台灣來展現他堅決支持自由民主的最好時機.」

這個亞太島國第一次不用『中華民國』, 而用『台灣』申請入會. 加拿大台灣人公共事務會完全贊成用『台灣』的名來申請聯合國會籍.

副會長賴再挺說, 「『中華民國』這個名是專制的國民黨時代的遺物, 事實上台灣和中國是兩個不同的主權國家, 聯合國應該考慮這個事實. 」
