Democratic Pacific Union to promote democracy and freedom in the Pacific Rim
For immediate release
Monday August 15, 2005, Toronto, Ontario, Canada - The Democratic Pacific
Union (DPU) was inaugurated on August 14, 2005 in Taipei, Taiwan. The new
organization seeks to promote democracy, peace and prosperity amongst
Pacific Rim nations. Taiwan has offered to host this fledgling
organization that includes notable members such as Canada, the United
States, Japan, Australia and Russia.
"The creation of the Democratic Pacific Union is a big step for the
promotion of prosperity and human rights throughout the Pacific Rim,"
stated Dr. Harry Chen, president of the Formosan Association for Public
Affairs Canada (FAPA Canada). "It is encouraging to see the 25 member
states of the DPU cooperate to promote responsible governance and
democratic consolidation in this key region of the world."
The DPU elected Taiwanese vice-president Annette Lu as its first
chairperson at the inaugural meeting. Canada's chief representative at
the DPU inauguration meeting was Senator Mac Harb. It is hoped that the
DPU can safeguard democracy and fundamental human rights in the Pacific
region. Furthermore, the DPU seeks to ensure that any international
disputes are solved peacefully through dialogue.
"Hopefully Canada can play a key role in promoting the DPU's goals and
aims," continued Chen. "We hope that the common values of Taiwan and
Canada can lead to increased ties between these two countries."
