A risky card to play

Re: Why Ottawa Is Right To Play The China Card, October 15, 2005
Your editorial encourages increased trade with China in light of the recent softwood-lumber
dispute with the United States. Although it is in Canada's interests to open new markets for
Canadian resources, it should proceed with much caution when seeking trade with China.
China has a history of unfair trade practices and flouting World Trade Organization rules, despite
being a member of that organization. Software piracy and copyright infringement are rampant in
China. Moreover, China controls its market access and gives favourable treatment to nations that
excuse its human-rights abuses.
Prime Minister Paul Martin should be very careful. Canada might find itself excusing China's shameful
behaviour while being held economic hostage by China's unfair trade practices.
